Below are factors to keep in mind when buying printer cartridges.
Which one do you need? An ink cartridge contains a liquid used by inkjet printers, while a toner cartridge comes with toner powder designed for a laser printer. First, determine the printer type to ensure you choose a compatible cartridge.
Laser or inkjet printer -- which one do you have? Laser printers have an electrostatic digital design whereby text and graphics are printed by passing a laser beam back and forth over a negatively charged cylinder, usually referred to as a drum. The drum then collects electrically charged toner powder and transfers the text or image on paper.
Inkjet printers are the most popular type. They work by propelling droplets of ink onto paper, plastic, or other material.
Understanding the type of printer you have is crucial in ensuring you get a compatible cartridge and achieve the quality of printing you want.
Cartridges come in different sizes to match different printers; therefore, ensure the cartridge you choose is designed to fit in your printer. Usually, cartridges come with numbers on the package that help you determine the size. You can also check the printer's manual or quickly search for your printer's model number to find a compatible cartridge.
If you want to replace your ink cartridge, it is crucial to understand the difference between standard and high-yield models. Standard cartridges come with a standard amount of printer ink, while high-yield ones are designed to take up the same amount of space in the inkjet printer while providing more ink.
The same goes for choosing toner cartridges. This type also comes with standard and high-yield models, with the standard one having a standard amount of toner and the high-yield one having more printer toner. So you can choose the most compatible one for your printer while ensuring quality printing in the long run.

*SpencerLab Sept 2021 study of printer inks sold in North America commissioned by HP for on-average performance of 16 brands of non-HP refill, remanufactured, and imitation cartridges vs. Original HP Ink SKUs 952XL, 63XL, 902XL, 950XL, 951XL. To account for reliability-driven supplies issues, defective and failed cartridges were included in the page yield calculations. Consequently, the reported page yield numbers are not based on ISO/IEC 24711 standard methodology, as it requires defective supplies be excluded from page yield calculation.
