HP USB-C G-5 Docking Station - Buyer Beware
The G5 docking station does not charge my laptop. The laptop must be plugged in separately. Additionally when connected to multiple monitors, one screen goes black at least once per minute sometimes every 20 seconds. other than these 2 flaws, it works good. Before purchasing, please Google "HP USB-C G5 Docking Station problems"

Works great with MacBook Air
The G5 is a replacement for a more portable docking device for my MacBook Air, which tended to overheat when operating an external disc drive. With the G5 I found I really don’t need the portability, it stays on my desk with accessories connected. An added benefit is my external speakers sound much better through the docking system, so high marks for the DAC in the G5!

Works fine after some initial incorrect setup error messages.
Easy setup - but I received some error messages during the setup of the new laptop the docking station was hooked up to. One was for the insufficient power, which is clearly wrong as the computer power need is on 75% of the dock output, and the second was for my mouse which was not even connected yet.

Can I use the HP G5 and switch between a desktop tower and a laptop? Trying to be able to switch monitors, keyboard, mouse, etc between a laptop and desktop. Currently the light on the G5 does not flash or turn on when connected to the desktop.
The HP G5 is compatible with PCs that have USB-C ports with power delivery and display port. As most desktops do not have this type of USB-C, desktops will not be compatible with the Dock.

How do I confirm if the docking station is "on"? I connected my laptop to the station but the docking station is not charging the laptop, the mouse is not working either. I've pressed the power button on top of the docking station but nothing is working.
Not all laptops with USB-C ports are compatible with Docks. Does your laptop have a USB-C port with PowerDelivery and DisplayPort? To answer your question, Docks are always on when they are plugged into an AC outlet, so it may very well be that the laptop doesn't have the proper port. How can I close my laptop and keep the screen open?
To keep your Windows laptop on when you close the lid, press the Windows + I keys to open Settings. Then go to System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings and click Choose what closing the lid does. Finally, select Do nothing in both columns next to When I close the lid.

Above the USB Type-C cable is a female USB Type-C port. What is this used for? Can I put in a USB Type-C to HDMI cable here and connect my docking station to my HP desktop? I want to go between using my personal desktop and laptop. (Desktop has no USB-C)
The USB-C port on the front of the Dock is used to charge peripherals such as a USB-C power phone, game controller, etc. The Dock requires a direct connection to the host PC via a USB-C port with DisplayPort and PowerDelivery. This will not be compatible with the desktop in question.
